4.- Medios de transporte en español

Medios de transporte en español

English:   ‘The’ with public transport.

First, we often use the when we are talking about a form of transport as a general idea.

(la moto the motorcycle)

We usually do this with public transport (not with cars or bikes) and we usually use verbs such as takebe onget on and get off:

  • We took the bus to school.
  • Cogimos el autobús para ir al colegio.
  • She gets off the underground in Central London.
  • Julie’s on the train at the moment.
  • Julie está ahora en el tren.
  •

In all of these examples, I’m not talking about a particular bus, train or plane but rather the system of transport as an idea.

To catch, to take, to get…the bus, the underground, the train… the plane

Coger el el autobús , el metro, el tren, el avión

Nonetheless we say…

I´m running late. I think I´d better catch a taxi

Voy con retraso…. Mejor será que coja UN taxi.

However, we use ‘no article’ when we use a form of transport with by:

No obstante, si lo que queremos expresar es el medio de transporte usamos “by” en inglés

y “en “ en español.

  • We travelled by plane.
  • Hicimos el viaje en avión. ( suena más natural que “viajamos” )
  • He goes to work by bus.
  • Va al trabajo en autobús
  • We went to Scotland by train.
  • Se fue a Escocia en tren.
  •

Remember, we can’t say ‘’ or ‘’ when we’re talking about walking. We say ‘on foot’ (also ‘no article’).

EXCEPCIÓN.     On foot= a pie.

Ir a pie.
