Cómo usar JUST y ONLY en inglés (con ejemplos)
Resulta que la palabra just tiene unos siete usos, y a veces significa lo mismo de only. Pero hay otras veces que no.
También puede ser almost, exactly, y muchas cosas más.
Vamos a ver…
1. Just = justo
Cuando se trata de un adjetivo, just es justo, de justicia.
A just political system takes the rights of minority groups into account.
Lo contrario es unjust:
I think it’s an unjust law, and I’ll call my Senator to tell him so!
Pero igual que “justo” en español, just puede ser algo como “exactamente” o “precisamente” también.
That’s just what I needed. Justo lo que necesitaba.)
I was at work, just like every morning. (Exactamente igual que todas las mañanas.)
2. Just = por poco, casi no llega,
La palabra just también puede significar “por poco” o “con poco margen”.
I ran as fast as I could, and I just barely caught the bus.
Por poco no cojo el autobús.
He has just enough money to pay his rent.
cuidado… enough es suficiente, o lo bastante como para… muchos alumnos creen que es “bastante”… No way! ¡Para nada !
We have just enough time to buy a sandwich before the train leaves.
Her grades were just good enough to graduate from high school.

3. Just about = casi, a punto de
La expresión just about significa casi. Así, puedes usarla en vez de almost.
Are you ready? It’s just about time to go.
Dinner is just about ready. Are you hungry?
Q: Are you finished with your homework?
A: Just about. Give me 5 minutes. (I’m almost finished with my homework.)
Q: Did we eat all the cake?
A: Just about. There’s only one piece left. (We ate almost all the cake.)
Y si usamos just about to do something (con un verbo en infinitivo) significa que estás en punto de hacer algo.
I was just about to call you.
He’s downstairs. He’s just about to leave.
Aquí un poco sobre el uso de just y only…
4. Just = sólo, sólamente
En algunos casos, just puede ser igual a only.
Q: How much coffee do you drink?
A: Not much. Just a cup every morning.
Q: How many books do you read in a year?
A: Just two or three.
Cuando se trata del significado de adverbio, “solamente” se puede usar only también.
He’s just 5 years old. You can’t expect him to be great at math.
O bien: He’s only 5 years old…
I’ve just got one sister.
I’ve only got one sister.
He doesn’t work much… just three days a week.
He doesn’t work much… only three days a week.
O bien, como dice la canción , “Girls just wanna have fun.”
Just shut up and kiss me… Barcelona.
También usamos just con un imperativo: para decir “haz eso y nada más”.
Así tenemos la canción de Lady Gaga, Just Dance
Y podemos hacer muchas frases:
Just shut up and kiss me!
Just stay here. I’ll be back in a few minutes.
Don’t just sit there… help me!
An example is when you want so say you have a small or limited amount of something:
“I just have 10 minutes to do my work.”
“I only have 10 minutes to do my work.”
But when I told Aria I was “just” having water, this meant that the drink was nothing special or interesting.
I wasn’t drinking something more interesting like juice, wine or whatever.
I was “just” having water.
Now, you can use “only” in this situation, but “just” is much more common because the meaning is more clear.
If you go to a friend’s house and they ask you if you’d like something to drink, you could reply by saying “(Just) water is fine.”
And you’d mean that you don’t need anything special or fancy because you don’t want them to go through any trouble for you.
You’re answering their polite offering with a polite response.
Saying “Only water…” in this situation could have the same meaning, but it could also mean that you can’t or won’t drink anything other than water.
See way natives prefer “just” here?
So, if you’re at a restaurant and your server asks if you’d like anything to drink with your order, but you don’t want anything other than water you’d say:
“Just water, please.”
5. Cómo usar JUST como adverbio de tiempo
Se usa just como adverbio de tiempo para decir que algo acaba de pasar. Normalmente, se pone entre auxiliar y verbo en el “Present Perfect”
I’ve just finished eating.
Acabo de terminar de comer. Ahora mismo he terminado de comer.
He’s just gotten back from his trip to France.
I’ve just heard the news… are you okay?
En Estados Unidos, usamos just también con el pasado simple, para decir lo mismo – que algo acaba de pasar.
He just left.
She just finished lunch.
Lo que pasa es que en EEUU usamos el pasado simple un poco más, y el presente perfecto un poco menos. Diferencias de gramática entre inglés británico y amrericano. Más sobre este punto en mi otra página.
6. Cómo usar just para dar énfasis.
Se podría traducir a just como “realmente”.
I just love this book! (Realmente me gusta.)
I hate cauliflower. I just hate it!
He just can’t lose weight, no matter how hard he tries.

7. Just like = exactamente igual
Ya vimos un ejemplo de este uso más arriba, pero just like es una forma bastante común de decir que algo es exactamente igual a otra cosa.
You’re just like your father… you never listen to me!
Paris was just like I expected: beautiful, and full of tourists.
She looks just like her sister.
Otros usos de only en inglés: if only, one and only
Como ya dije, la palabra only se usa muchas veces como solo o solamente.
Luego tenemos alone, que es solo de estar sin otras personas.
He enjoys being alone.
I’ve been living alone for several years now.
Pero hijo único es an only child.
He’s an only child, but his parents are thinking about having another baby.
I grew up as an only child, but I had a lot of cousins.
Y luego tenemos if only, que es algo que expresa un deseo, más o menos como la palabra wish.
If only I had enough money to go to Rome with you!
If only she had asked me! I would have been happy to help.
Fíjate que se usa if only con pasado simple o pasado perfecto, para dejar claro que es una situación irreal.
