Hoy voy a explicar cómo usar used to en inglés, para hablar del pasado.
La expresión used to más el infinitivo se utiliza en inglés para hablar de algo que ocurría en el pasado, o que pasó durante un largo tiempo en el pasado y que ya no ocurre más, o no tiene validez o vigencia, ya no es cierto.
Es, por así decirlo, el pasado de usually.
I used to go running three times a week. (Solía ir a correr 3 veces por semana… pero ahora no.)
I usually go running three times a week.
Puede traducirse al español como
1. Antes solía + infinitivo español.
2. Antes + pretérito imperfecto– antes iba, hacía, era, tenía, vivía en…
la forma 2ª funciona siempre, mientras que la primera, a veces suena extraño…
imagínate que te dicen
He used to be a priest.
Él solía ser sacerdote… suena a rayos, verdad?
Pues qué tal
Antes era sacerdote… ufff qué gusto, español de verdad.
Así la forma de usar used to es seguido por un verbo en infinitivo:
I used to do it. Y no hace falta añadir: Now I don’t.

Ejemplos de cómo usar USED TO en inglés
I used to go to Manchester every summer, but now I go to Liverpool. = “Solía ir a Manchester” o bien, “Antes iba a Manchester todos los veranos. Ahora voy a Liverpool”
My parents used to live in London, but now they live in Munich. = Mis padres vivían antes en Londres, pero ahora viven en Múnich.
She used to work in a bank, but now she works in a bar.
He used to have a lot of hair, but now he’s bald. Antes tenía un montón de pelo…pero ahora es calvo.
I used to like sweets, but now I never eat them. Antes me gustaban las chuches, ahora nunca tomo.
Can you see that girl over there? I used to go out with her. ¿Ves a esa chica de ahí? Yo antes salía con ella.
I used to have a cat, but now I have a dog.
Ahora vamos a ver negaciones y preguntas con didn’t use to y did you use to, que cambian un poco desde la forma afirmativa.
Negaciones con USED TO – didn’t use to
Para hacer la negación, usamos “didn’t use to,” quitando la “d” de “used” ya que es el auxiliar (did) el que está en pasado. Se usa para referirnos a algo no ocurría en el pasado, pero ahora sí.
I didn’t use to be married, and I certainly didn’t use to live in Manchester! (But now I’m married and I live in Manchester.)
Antes, ni estaba casado ni vivía en Manchester … (je je ahora sí)
Susan didn’t use to listen to classical music, but now he loves it.
Antes Susan no escuchaba música clásica, pero ahora le encanta.
We didn’t use to spend so much money when we travelled, because we never used to stay in hotels.
Antes no nos gastábamos tanto dinero al viajar, porque nunca nos alojábamos en hoteles.
David didn’t use to go out much, but now he goes out all the time.
He didn’t use to spend so much time in the gym, but now he’s trying to get in shape.
Preguntas con USED TO – Did you used to?
Las preguntas se hacen con “Did you/he/she/etc use to…” otra vez quitando la “d” al “used.”
Preguntas y respuestas:
Q: Did you use to go to Andalucía every summer?
A: Yes, I did. I used to go to Marbella with my parents.
Q: Where did you use to go on holiday?
A: I used to go to my parents’ village in Galicia
Q: When did you use to get up in the morning?
A: I used to get up at 7:30, but now I get up at 8:30.
Q: How did you use to get to work?
A: I used to get to work by bus, but now I go by car.
Resumen de cómo usar USED TO
Aquí tenemos afirmación, negación y preguntas con used to. Recuerda que se tratan de hábitos en pasado:
(+) I used to eat fish every Friday.
(-) I didn’t use to eat fish every Friday
(?) Did you use to eat fish every Friday?
(?) How often did you use to eat fish?
Pero no te confundas…
OJO… aquí el verbo es to use
No confundir con
to be used to(verbo to be)= estar acostumbrado
y
to get used to (verbo to get)= acostumbrarse
Los tratamos en capítulo aparte porque … VAN SEGUIDAS DE GERUNDIO no de infinitivo…
